Girls Do Science
Join the sisterhood of science ambassadors in this exciting new incarnation of a perennial favorite. Designed for girls entering 5th or 6th grade, this semester-long club enables young women to experience for themselves how fun science and engineering can be, introducing them to hands-on explorations led by local experts and providing the opportunity to share their knowledge and enthusiasm with younger girls.
Centered on the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the curriculum leads participants on an exploration of the mechanics and use of oil rigs, the fundamentals of protecting water resources, the promise of bioengineering in clean-up efforts, the rescue and protection of wildlife and ecosystems, and the forensics of environmental criminal investigations.
Exploring a new discipline each month, participating Science Ambassadors will venture into the community to learn from female experts in their laboratories and the field. Then the girls will work together to build science literacy, sisterhood, and self-confidence as they complete an experiment or activity that applies principles shared by the experts. Finally they will venture out into the community once more to share their understanding with younger girls enrolled in after-school programs. Meeting weekly, each class will include a team building exercise, a brief exercise in scientific visualization/graphing and how to approach such information during standardized testing, as well as a light supper.
Class meets Monday evenings from 4:00-7:00pm beginning September 13 and running through December 27. A waiver and fees to use MTD to transport on field trips are required.
